Oxymatrine Description: The main active component in the dried roots of Sophora flavescens is the sophora alkaloids, and the content of oxymatrine is the highest (about 70% of the total alkaloids of Sophora flavescens), followed by matrine. They both have a wide range of biological activities, such as anti-inflammation, analgesic, antiarrhythmic effects, antibiosis and so on.

The molecular structures of matrine and oxymatrine are similar, and they have similar pharmacological activities. The nitrogen atom of oxymatrine binds with oxygen by coordination bond. That is to say, oxymatrine has one more oxygen atom than matrine. Because of the special oxygen structure, its molecular polarity has changed, and its pharmacological activity is stronger than matrine.

 Oxymatrine can effectively kill kinds of anaerobic bacteria, including Propionibacterium acnes, and has a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Oxymatrine also has an anti-allergic effect. It can inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators, and stabilize the cell membrane. What’s more, tyrosinase is the main rate-limiting enzyme in melanogenesis. Oxymatrine inhibits melanin formation by inhibiting tyrosinase activity. In one word, Oxymatrine has a good development prospect in anti-acne, pigmentation inhibition, skin whitening and so on.

In the pharmaceutical field, oxymatrine is mainly used in the liver and cardiovascular systems.

Oxymatrine can be used in combination with Common Cnidium Fruit Extract and has good inhibitory activity against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus.
