In the 90s of last century, scholars in Japan, the United States and Philippines began to systematically study the Lagerstroemia speciosa (L.) Pers.. The leaves of Lagerstroemia mainly contain tannins, triterpene, alkaloids, flavonoids, organic acids, sterols and other chemical constituents. The main active ingredients are tannin and triterpene. It is known as "natural plant insulin" in Malaysia.
